Translation as specific language type - English to Russian translationThis article presents translation as a specific type of language. Most Russian translators consider their activity as a profession and would like the others to treat them like professionals. In order to achieve this aim, they need to develop an ability to stand back and reflect on what they do and how they do it. Like the representatives of other professions (doctors, engineers, etc.) they have to prove to themselves as well as others that they are in control of what they do. They often state that they do not just make perfect translations from English to Russian as they have 'flair' for translation, but rather because, like others, they have made a conscious effort to realise different aspects of their work. Contrasting to medicine and engineering, English to Russian translation, German and other languages is a considerably young discipline in academic terms. It is only just becoming a subject of study in its own right in an increasing number of universities, institutes and colleges worldwide. Being a young discipline, it needs to draw on the theories investigations of other related disciplines to create its own methods. And the question, which disciplines are really connected and related to translation (and to English-Russian translation as well), stays to be rather arguable among the translstion specialists. The difficulty lies in that, that almost each life aspect can be considered as relevant to translation. No doubt, translation to Russian, English and other languages is a big area to investigate in one go. So if translation is ever to become a profession in its full sense, translators will need something more than just the intuition and practice to enable them to reflect on what they do and how they do it. First of all they need a solid knowledge of theoretical material with which they work. Translation is a process of rendering a text or a speech by means of other languages. Thus for intstance, translation from English to Russian is rendering of English text or speech by gramatical, lexical, stylistic, etc. means of the Russian language. Text translation differs from retelling or other kinds of transfer of an original in the following: translation is a process of creating an original unity in contexts and forms of original. While translating from English to Russian one should remember that different lexical and grammatical elements of English text are to be translated differently according to the norms of conformity to the whole original. The translation adequacy of separate words, phrases, sentences and paragraphs should not be considered separately but aimed at the achievement of the adequacy and completeness of the translating part as a whole as the unity of a part can be created through the components collecting. It doesn't matter how a translator is clever and talented he shouldn't forget two the most important moments in translation: |
